Tory Brennan has had quite a year. Her mom passed away and she moved to South Carolina to live with the dad who never even knew she existed. Tory learned that she is the great-niece of the famous forensic scientist Temperance Brennan. If that wasn’t enough to stress about, Tory and her new group of science-minded friends have stumbled upon a mystery, and together they are working to solve a forty-year-old murder. There is also the small hiccup of breaking into the lab where all of their parents work and being exposed to an experimental strain of the canine parvovirus, which has changed their DNA and given them super wolf powers. They are now the Virals.
Why I picked up the book: I had been considering it for a summer book club, since science was the theme. Several members of my high school group had read and liked it and wanted us to discuss it.
I finished the book: To find out if the Virals will find a cure and an answer to the mystery. The book is definitely an easy and fast read but also very predictable. I’m sure my group will love it!
I’d give it to: Fans of James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series, Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider series and/or teen fans of the TV series Bones. Those who like this book will be glad to know there are three others in the series, with a fifth book due out next spring. There are also two short e-novellas, Shift and Swipe [click on the links to head over to the Virtual Library and check them out!]
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
