Book Review: This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E Smith

This Is What Happy Looks Like

It all started with a email Graham mistakenly sent to the wrong person, looking for a sitter for his pet Wilbur. Ellie emails him back, just to point out his mistake and they begin a three month series of email exchanges and build a cyber friendship. Graham, however, is more than he lets on. He is a famous teen movie star and wants to meet Ellie, so much so that he convinces the movie producers to change the location of his next movie to her hometown on the coast of Maine. He plans to walk into the ice cream shop where Ellie works and surprise her. But the surprise is on Graham, because after a messy mixup, Ellie loans her work shirt to her best friend Quinn and walks out of the shop just as Graham is walking in. He asks Quinn out, and she excitedly accepts, because who wouldn’t say yes to a teen heartthrob. During dinner, the mistaken identity becomes apparent and Graham sets off to find the real Ellie. But will Ellie really be happy to see Graham? How will secrets from Ellie’s past affect their current and future happiness?

Why I picked up the book: This author had been recommended to me many times. Another librarian told me about it when we were discussing the Soaring Eagle nominees and I was sold.
Why I finished it: I liked both Graham and Ellie. They seemed real and I wanted to know how it would all shake out.
I’d give it to: readers who like Sarah Dessen. Readers looking for a fun, cute summer beach read without too much romance or over the top smooch. Celebrity obsessed People magazine readers.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
