Book Review: Smile by Raina Telgemeier

Raina is an average sixth grader who wants nothing more than to fit in, have a social life, and maybe even find a boyfriend. She becomes a little less average after taking a bad fall on her face and knocking her two front teeth out, resulting in years of dental work, headgear and braces, and even a retainer with false teeth. Raina is embarrassed and in pain, surrounded by friends that seem more interested in making fun of her than helping out. Raina dreams of having her two front teeth back, but has to settle for a lengthy and agonizing process of shifting her side teeth to the front so that they can be disguised as regular front teeth. This ordeal will follow her through junior high, from old friends to new friends, from awkward crush to awkward crush. It’s a lot for a teenager to deal with. Will Raina ever be able to show her smile again?

I picked this book up because the art was attractive.

I finished it because I had to know what Raina’s teeth would look like at the end.

I’d give this book to just about any teenager who wants to fit in.

Rating: **** Really liked it!
