Life in the In-Betweens
By Brenda Thomson, Community Relations Coordinator

As children, our lives are all about milestones: birthdays, football games, music recitals, graduations, trips to the zoo. As we grow up the milestones seem to get further in-between: marriage, “big” birthdays, new jobs, important purchases like homes or cars, birth of children, family reunions.
As we mature, we learn that life is mostly lived not at the milestones, but in-between them. While the milestones are what we remember, the real work happens in getting there. Did you know your public library can help with that?
So, your nest is empty, or you have just retired!
Find ways to fill your time and enrich this new part of your life at the library.
Check out travel or trail guides for wherever your children may have moved to, or destinations you can visit for a family reunion. Look at Consumer Reports to find the RV or boat that’s right for you.
Spend time enjoying new movies or TV shows, watching documentaries to learn new things, or discovering a new favorite author and reading all of their books. Try out a few new hobbies or fuel the fire for the hobbies you already have with books from your library.
So, you purchased a house!
After the happy photos, painting and moving in are accomplished even the newest homes take maintenance, landscaping and décor.
Use your library to learn skills any homeowner will appreciate: discover decorating styles, wiring basics, painting techniques, woodworking projects, and tips for simple home repairs on the shelves of your library.
You can even check out an electricity meter to monitor how much your appliances are costing you.
So, you’re getting married!
Your library is good for books on wedding planning and organization, etiquette, decorations and more.
But the ring is just the beginning.
For the new life you are embarking on, you’ll find all sorts of resources on financial planning, communication, relationship building, living cheaply, cooking, and raising kids.
So, you (or a loved one) have been diagnosed with an illness.
The library has books, online resources and even documentaries with information on all kinds of medical and health concerns you may encounter throughout life. Librarians are available to help you find just what you need to educate yourself and be prepared.
So, you want a new job!
The Library is the place to start. We have regular “Job Search Skills” classes, giving tips for your job search. Use our computers or wi-fi network for job seeking – both are free!
You will also find resources for updating your resume, passing professional exams, or writing funding proposals. Starting your own business? There are frequent classes on small business topics held at the library - call 577-READ ext. 2 to find out more.
Just like in life, the possibilities are endless at your library. As you are doing the real work of living in-between the milestones, be sure to get the resources that will enhance the journey and enrich your life.
Those resources are free and easily available, right here at your Natrona County Public Library.
