Another summer is coming to a close and that means students of all ages will be heading back to school. This summer the library has become an integral part of many young people’s lives, and this doesn’t have to end once they enter classroom doors. Natrona County Public Library has planned many exciting programs to help your child survive another school year.
Young Adult fall programming begins Wednesday, September 6 with Anime Club at 4 p.m. Those teens interested in meeting other anime fans, viewing anime, discussing manga and having fun are invited to attend. Teenagers with an interest in writing are encouraged to bring their work and join the Teen Writers’ Club which meets Tuesday, September 19 at 4 p.m. Both Anime and Teen Writers’ Club meet once per month and schedules are available in the Teen Zone.
NCPL also offers young people the opportunity to further their love of reading by joining one of our book clubs. The Afternoon Book Club, for teens in grades 6-8, is reading “Nothing but the Truth,” by Avi, and will meet at Metro Coffee Company on Wednesday, September 20 at 4 p.m. or Saturday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. Teen Book Club, for those in grades 9-12, will meet Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. to discuss “1984,” by George Orwell. Those signing up for book club will receive a free copy of the book and a free drink at Metro.
Dinner and a Movie, a teen favorite, will resume Friday, September 15 at 7 p.m. with pizza and a showing of the film “The Pink Panther” featuring Steve Martin. Wednesday, September 27 sees the return of the program series Somethin’ To Do with “Hemp, Hemp, Hooray!” Youth involved in this weaving and beading workshop can create their own jewelry, bookmarks, key chains and more. Teens can sign up by calling the Teen Zone at 237-4935 ex.101. Somethin’ To Do is organized and sponsored by the Natrona County Public Library, Nicolaysen Art Museum and the Youth Empowerment Council.
Teens who want to “Get Active @ Your Library” should mark their calendars for Teen Read Week, October 15-21. For more information or to register for events, call 237-4935 x101.
Don’t forget to stop by the library after school to hang out, do homework or check out some of the new books available in the Teen Zone. Try “The Fruit Bowl Project,” by Sarah Durkee, “Love, Football, and Other Contact Sports,” by Alden Carter, or ” The Two Loves of Will Shakespeare,” by Laurie Lawlor. New nonfiction titles include “The Hero Project,” by Robert and William Hatch, and “Choices for the High School Graduate,” by Bryna J. Fireside.
Individuals looking for a comfortable place to study are invited to take advantage of the library’s new fall hours. Beginning Monday, September 11, your library will be open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
