By Kate Mutch, Public Services Librarian

June 14 , 2006

Kick back during these lazy, hazy days of summer with some great new books from your Natrona County Public Library.  Here are some intriguing reads hot off the presses:

Fiction:
“Promise Me,” by Harlan Coben
Myron Bolitar returns in this suspenseful tale about a missing teenage girl. Myron is the last to have seen her and must use all his resources to discover what happened before the girl is lost forever.  Coben fans won’t be disappointed with this one.

“Magic Hour,” by Kristin Hannah
Dr. Julia Cates is called to help an abandoned mute girl. Cates, reeling from her own personal and professional disasters, is quickly drawn into the quest to discover where this girl is from and how to get her to talk again. She falls in love with the girl, and the bond they form may be the secret to healing for both the young child and Julia.

Nonfiction:
“Cobra 2: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq,” by Michael Gordon and General Bernard E. Trainor
A chronicle of America's invasion and occupation of Iraq, “Cobra 2” is a revealing inside story of how the war is planned and fought. The authors use interviews with top military commanders and a review of the military’s internal after-action reports to document this story.

“The Great Starvation Experiment: The Heroic Men Who Starved so that Millions Could Live,” by Todd Tucker
This is an account of 36 conscientious objectors who, at the end of WWII, volunteered to take part in a year-long starvation experiment to help the survivors of concentration camps who were dying of malnutrition.

“Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln,”by Doris Kearns Godwin
This book provides fresh insight into Lincoln’s leadership and offers a compelling multiple-biography of Lincoln and three of his cabinet members, who were originally Lincoln’s opponents for the Republican nomination in 1860.  Lincoln, wise enough to choose the best men for the job despite the political animosity, managed to turn enemies into allies.

“The Terrible Hours: The Man behind the Greatest Submarine Rescue in History,” by Peter Maas
A thrilling account of the world's first submarine rescue, the story alternates between the rescue attempt of the 33 men who survived the 1939 test diving accident and their agonized families.

“Thieves of Baghdad: One Marine's Passion for Ancient Civilizations and the Journey to Recover the World's Greatest Stolen Treasures,” by Matthew Bogdanos
Written by a man who committed himself to the investigation of stolen artifacts, this is a riveting detective story, adventure yarn and history lesson all tied into one.

“And You Know You Should Be Glad: A True Story of Lifelong Friendship,”by Bob Greene
In this nostalgic autobiography, author Bob Greene reunites with his four best childhood friends after one is diagnosed with a terminal illness and explores the power that friendship has to uphold us, sustain us and ultimately set us free.

These are just a few of the great new books available at NCPL; come to your library and let us help you find your perfect summer read!
