Winter Programs @ your library

By Sarah Mitchell and Nicholle Edwards, Reference Librarians

January 12, 2005

Don’t let the winter doldrums get you down – as the snow falls and the wind blows, join your Natrona County Public Library for some great winter programs.

Time for a Good Book-

Have you ever wanted to join a reading program, but didn’t have the time to read an entire book? This year, your Natrona County Public Library’s second annual adult reading program, “Time for a Good Book,” has been designed with your busy schedule in mind. To participate, pick up a reading journal at the library’s second floor reference desk and receive a fun prize just for signing up. The journal can also be downloaded from www.library.natrona.net. Then record in your journal the number of hours you spend reading. And you don’t only have to read books. Reading newspapers and magazines, as well as materials for work, information from websites and text books also counts toward “Time for a Good Book.” Add these hours you spend exercising your eyes and mind, and once you reach a level, bring your journal to the library to be entered in a drawing for great prizes. The program is for those aged 18 and over and runs until February 18. Drawings will be held on January 21 and February 4, and a grand prize drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Eastridge Mall will take place on February 18. So connect to reading fun at your library from January 10 to February 18 and join us – it’s “Time for a Good Book!” Please call 237-4935 for more information.

Spring Independent Film Festival-

Natrona County Public Library is excited to present a continuation of last fall’s popular Independent Film Festival. This spring version of the festival will include films from Norway, France, Australia, Canada and Portugal and will run through June. Films will be presented Tuesday evenings in the Crawford Room with discussion and refreshments to follow. Please join us in viewing these award-winning movies and expanding your film horizons.

The film series will begin on Tuesday, January 18 at 6:30 PM with the Norwegian comedy “Buddy.” “Buddy” is a movie about friendship and tells the tale of 24-year-old Kristoffer. Kristoffer’s life is good -- he has a girlfriend, hangs out with his buddies and videotapes all of the crazy stunts they pull off. Everything is thrown into turmoil, however, when his girlfriend dumps him and some of these video diaries end up national TV, turning Kristoffer’s life into Norway’s favorite reality television program. The fame is wonderful but is losing his two best friends in the process worth it?

Upcoming films will include: “Wolves in the Snow” (France),
“Falling Angels”(Canada), “The Man of the Year” (Portugal), “The Rage in Placid Lake” (Australia) and “Raja” (Morocco). For a complete schedule, please contact the library at 237-4935, or visit www.library.natrona.net. If you are interested in seeing these films, or other independent films but will not have time to attend the series, all films will be available to check-out – ask a librarian about placing one on reserve.
