The Natrona County Library and Central Wyoming Astronomical Society will host a star party for all ages on Monday, July 31 at 8 p.m. at the Natrona County Library. The program will begin just before sunset with a presentation on astronomy and the dark skies of Casper. As the Sun sets and daylight fades, attendees will get to view a variety of celestial wonders through several large telescopes. Depending on the night, attendees might see craters and mountain ranges on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s Galilean moons, star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, and more! Book Club Field Trip: American Eclipse @ Casper Planetarium

The Natrona County Library is taking adult book discussions on the road. As part of this summer reading’s eclipse-inspired theme, “LOOK UP,” participants will gather at a new location each month for a book discussion. This month’s Book Club Field Trip will be held on Tuesday, August 8 at 4 p.m. at the Casper Planetarium. July’s novel is “American Eclipse” by David Baron. The discussion is free and open to the public. Eclipse and Night Photography @ Crawford Room

The Natrona County Library will host Astrophotographer and Astrocon Presenter Terry Mann on Wednesday, August 16 at 6:30 p.m. Terry will discuss imaging the total solar eclipse using different techniques and equipment, the basics of eclipse viewing and preparing for it, Earth and sky imaging, how to work in the dark, and how to use a camera and tripod to take shots of the Milky Way Galaxy. Mann has traveled to many places to view celestial events, including Australia, Aruba, Bolivia, Chile, and Egypt. Her photos and articles have been published in local newspapers and magazines as well as on television and websites such as Astronomy magazine, Sky and Telescope magazine, the Reflector magazine, Spaceweather.com, and Space.com. She also has exhibited in art galleries and museums, and was selected as a First Light Observer at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Gerhana Matahari: Chasing the Tropical Total Solar Eclipse @ Crawford Room

The Natrona County Library will host Matt Ventimiglia on Thursday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. Ventimiglia ventured to the Java Sea and Indonesia to chase the total solar eclipse of March 9, 2016. Along the way he had breakfast with orangutans, encountered the legendary Komodo Dragon, visited Borobudur, stood before the Cikoneng Lighthouse, and caught fleeting views of the volcanic wonderland at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Ventimiglia’s travelogue slideshow will cover these adventures, a brief geological and natural history of the Indonesian archipelago, and conclude with a preview of this year’s Great American Total Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017, the first to be seen in the contiguous states of the USA since 1979. Ventimiglia is a Griffith Observatory Museum Guide, and holds a BA in Physics, MA in Cinema, MS in Geology, and a MA in History. He has travelled to all seven continents and has seen eleven total solar eclipses, five annular eclipses, two transits of Venus, and three transits of Mercury.
