Multicultural Literature for Children
An Annotated Bibliography
It is important to expose children and young adults to books featuring many cultures. Many books are now being published in this genre; however, not all are as accurate as they should be. These annotated bibliographies include books that provide a realistic and accurate portrayal of different cultures, that have been published in the last five years and are available at the Natrona County Public Library.
When choosing multicultural books for your children or your classroom, librarians and authors stress these points:
- These books should show the real lives of American children of different cultural backgrounds. Some can be about immigrants, but some should also be about second and third generation Americans.
- These books should not be only historical fictions or legends from these different cultures.
- The main characters in these books should represent their own culture, but also show how they are like other American children.
- These books should be current, so check the copyrights. Many publishers are pushing old books to make it look like they have many multicultural titles.
- These books should be shared with all students, not just those from these cultural groups.
